FIRE IN FRANKTON

The Hamilton Fire Brigade made a good save on Saturday morning when called out to a blaze in a four-roomed cottage in Rimu Street. Frankton Junction. occupied by Mrs. S. Stonehouse. The State Fire Office held the insurances of £3OO on the house and £IOO on the furniture.

PATERANGI TENNIS OPENING The Paterangi Tennis Club opened its courts for the season last week. The courts were in excellent order. Mr. S. C. B. Macky, club president, presented trophies to the winners of the last Easter tournament, Mrs. S. Smith and Mr. Ivan White, after which he declared the courts open for play for the ensuing season. During the afternoon the ladies provided refreshments.

THAMES RIFLE CLUB

THE MILLER CUP The silver cup presented to tl.e Thames Rifle Club by Mr. E. N. Miller in 1920 is still being competed for. A competition for the cup took place on Saturday, when Rifleman C. Cameron proved the winner. Rifleman R. Cameron headed the list of shooters, with the good score of 95 out of a possible 100, but he did not compete for the prize. The scores are:

A contingent of Wajhi shooters has arrived in Thames, and will fire a match with the members of the local club. The visitors are being entertained on the range by the Thames Club.

JERSEY CLUB

MEETING AT TE AWAMUTU The monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Jersey Club was held on Friday evening, Mr. G. S. Clarke presiding. There were also present: Messrs. F. J. B. Ryburn, S. C. B. Macky, C. Parker, A. Johnson, and J. G. Wynyard (secretary). The secretary reported that the recent pedigree bull sale had been a decided success. It was decided to arrange for another spring sale of pedigree Jers. bulls on Friday, October 5, 1928, and to ask the auctioneers to include this notification in their list of annual sales. The following new members were elected:—Messrs. G. S. Hall, Hairini; Coe Bros., Te Kawa; G. W. Johnson, Hairini; E. H. Crawford. Te Mawhai: I. J. Kerr, Korakonui; and G. T. Harker, Te Kawa.

HANDICAP PAIRS CONTEST The Te Awamutu Bowling' Club played the second round of the handicap pairs on Saturday afternoon. The result was as follows:—Wilson and Roberts beat Smith and Jourdain; Hawkins and Dunkley beat T. Mclnne* and Chittenden; Ross and C. Mclnne* beat White and Bryant; Metcalfe ami Cocker beat C. Bowden and Christie. Handicap Singles: Roberts beat McArthur; Wilson beat T. Mclnne?: Smith beat C. Bowden; C. Mclnnes beat Christie; Metcalfe beat Ross. The club’s green is in good order, and is playing better this year thaa it has done in the past. The supervisor is Mr. Jim North, green superintendent. A special meeting of the executive of the Te Awamutu Bowling Club took place on Friday night, when it was decided to accept the scheme of interclub games introduced by the Waikato Bowling Association. There are ten clubs included in the scheme, comprising Hamilton. Hamilton East. Whitiora, Olaudelands. Frankton. Frankton Railways, Ngaruawahia, Huntly, Cambridge and Te Awamutu.
