JASPER'S FANCY
MELBOURNE CUP
PANTHEON A GOOD HORSE The Rev. Jasper Calder returned to Auckland to-day by the Aorangi after a six weeks' holiday in Australia. The City Missioner was elated. The> reason? Well—he has an opinion on the Melbourne Cup. Mr. Calder has no objection to all Auckland knowing it. It is Pantheon. And, he says, a good horse, too. He saw Limerick run on both occasions, and to use his own words, the New Zealander is “a great horse!” Mr. Calder was exceedingly pleased with the arrangements at Randwick. The city missioner also found time to look into the “tin hare” question. “As a matter of fact, I was appalled at the gambling this time in Sydney,” he said, “and, especially among the young people. I have been a raceenthusiast for years, and it amazed me. “I understand that the tin hares are to be run here, and I hope that they will be kept free from gambling. That has been the trouble in Sydney, where the sport has not been in the best of hands. Personally, I would welcome the sport, for it is a good sport, provided, of course, that the gambling element is kept out of it.” Mr. and Mrs. Calder found time to visit the Blue Mountains, also Queensland. The missioner has returned in excellent health, though a trifle disappointed that the sunshine which they left behind at Sydney did not reappear to welcome them this morning on their return to Auckland.
