HONOURED BY LONDON A scholastic achievement stands to the credit of Mr. R. W. Firth, son of Mr. W. H. B. Firth, Otahuhu. Cable news has been received that he has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of London University, where he has been a research student for the last three years. Dr. Firth, who is only 26 years of age, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and graduated M.A. with first-class honours in Economics at Auckland University College. He then proceeded to London University, where he took up anthropological study, the subject for his thesis being “The Economic Organisation of Polynesian Societies.” Dr. B. Malinowsky, his tutor, has been impressed with Dr. Firth’s work and they have collaborated on some important research w'ork. Dr. Malinowsky has written in glowing terms of the work his student has done. Dr. Firth will return to Auckland at the end of the year. After a stay of some months at home he will proceed to Rennell Island, in the Solomons, for 3 2 months, where he will carry out research work for the Australian National Research Council.
