HAURAKI DRAINAGE

UNITED BOARD’S MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board was held at Turua on Friday last, Mr. S. S. Murray presiding. The chairman reported that a committee of the board had waited on the resident engineer of the Public Works Department, Paeroa, in reference to the work outlined in a plan recently recived concerning the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers improvement scheme in the board’s territory. It had been pointed out that insufficient outlets were provided and that wide bottom, steep banked drains were contemplated. The resident engineer had agreed to recommend one additional flood-gate, to increase the size of one proposed gate, and to adopt one to one batters and 2ft. bottoms on all drains. Messrs. Murray, Hamilton, Thompson and McDuff were appointed a committee to formulate a drainage scheme for the area for submission to the Public Works Department. Much correspondence was read in* connection with the loan authorities of the TIo mhia and Hauraki Drainage Boards, now defunct, and merged in the United Board. A copy of the Supreme Court judgment to the effect that the authorities of the defunct boards did not pass to the succeeding board was received from the solicitor, Mr. E. L. Walton, who pointed out that while this decision was against the board, it was only by reason of this decision that validating and empowering legislation was promised. It was decided that tenders be called for the construction of the Te Kauri drain. The work will be let in three sections —-from the river to the Huirau Road, between the Huirau and the Hauraki Roads, and from the Hauraki Road to the far end. Notice was given of intention to strike a general rate over the whole area of lid in the£ for “A” land and 1 for "B” class land. The special rates will be: —Horahia area loans, 6-Sd for “A” and 5-Sd for “B.” and Hauraki area loans 7-8 d for “A” and 6-8 d for “B” class.
