Trains Held Up By Derailed Tender
EXPRESSES LATE LEAVING MISHAP IN RAILWAY YARDS Owing to the tender of one of the big “A” class engines leaving the rails in the Auckland Station yards this morning, both inward and outward traffic was temporarily delayed. The mishap occurred on one of the key-traps, generally known as points, near the road crossing right at the station. The consequence was that the station could not be cleared as expeditiously as usual, nor could the outward trains be backed in. Suburban inward trains began to back up, and many passengers completed their journey on foot. The Whangarei express was over half an hour late getting away, and the service generally was temporarily disorganised. The Thames train was about 15 minutes late in leaving. Nearly two hours were required to get the tender back on the rails. Little if any damage was done either to the tender or to the track. “It could not have happened in a worse place,” said a railway official this morning, “and it says much for the offleers of the department that the service was not more disorganised.”
