TALKING FILM MADE BY GAUMONT
FRENCH EXPERIMENTS A new talking film makes its appearance in France, where Leon Gaumont has given demonstrations of the filmophone. Members of the French Photographic Society attended a showing of the device, perfected by Gaumont from patents ceded to him by Poulsen and Petersen, Danish inventors. The instrument used at the demonstration is about the size of an ordinary projector. It was constructed by
the Etablissements Gaument for the Societe Francaise des Film parlants. Gaumont’s machine is worked through the action of light rays on a cellule of selenium. Sound is registered on the film through the workings of a microphone attached to the source of light. The film is then passed through the projector having a comparatively feeble light and the projection of the film upon the selenium, which is contained in a tiny rectangular case, reacts upon A the loud-speaker which gives the sound. :| The problem of recording and trans- ( mitting sound upon the apparatus is * j said to have worked out perfectly, but ; the loud-speaker still gives consider- : able trouble, for with the amplifica- ■ tion of sound goes that of '‘parasites.'' L Gaumont will experiment until the speaker is perfected.
