JOSEPH HISLOP
FAMOUS ENGLISH TENOR A British-born singer, with an international reputation. It surely is the most gratifying thing about Mr. Hislop, the famous tenor, who will be in Auckland next month, and whose Australian tour has been a succession of triumphs. Within recent months we have seen a succession of notable foreign artists take the platform, for which we are truly thankful, for they have discoursed music rich and rare; yet the absence of musicians of our own kin has been disappointing, if not ominous. Now, however, the situation is saved by the appearance of Mr. Hislop, who has shown in the most convincing, if not thrilling manner, the merits of his wonderful musical pasture. Not that this great tenor is unknown to music-lovers in Australia and New Zealand. His very beautiful series of gramophone records have won him many friends, and will continue to do so as the new ones come forward. “It was a pleasurable experience,” writes the Sydney “Daily Telegraph,” “to visit the tenor a few days ago at his Sydney home, and there to find the warmth of his delightful personality. He spoke enthusiastically of recordings, and spent some time playing over samples of his latest efforts; those I heard were pearls of artistry. Mostly they were records of Scottish ballads, lovely old airs, which the Scottish interpreter sang with exquisite appeal. There were also a couple of captivating Swedish songs—Mr. Hislop is most popular in Sweden—but they were intended, he said, for the Scandinavian market.” The Auckland season opens in the Town Hall on Thurdsay, November 3. Preliminary applications for seats are now being received.
