Cork Trees Grow in Sunny Albert Park
Three very fine specimens of the cork oak grow in Albert Park ,beside the path which runs from Bowen Avenue toward the Victoria monument. These trees are the real cork tree whose forebears probably -grew in sunny Spain and provided the stoppers for many a flagon and bottle of wine.
| The foliage is a dark, glossy green and the trees bear innumerable acorns in season. The cork is a most attractive tree, with its widespreading branches and twisted limbs. Passers-by have cut into the bark on them, but the patches soon grow again and hide the disfigurement. Here in Auckland there are not suffi- | cirrit of the trees to supply bark for ! the manufacture of corks, but apparI cntly the climate is quite suitable if it were decided to start in the industry in i a small way. i In the south of Europe, the home of \the cork tree, there are many beautiful groves of them. Their curiously I shaped limbs make ideal subjects for l the landscape painter .
