Australian Aborigines Desire Seats in Federal Parliament
EXAMPLE OF THE MAORIS
By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Received 10.15 a.m. CANBERRA, To-day. JJEPRESENTATION of the aborigines in the Federal Parliament of Australia is sought, somewhat on the lines of the Maoris of New Zealand. A petition in those terms has been presented to Parliament.
CDHE petition is also in favour of creating a model aboriginal State, to be managed ultimately by a native tribunal as far as possible according to their own laws and customs, but prohibiting cannibalism and cruel rites. The petition urges that provision
should be made, so that ultimately the Government of the State might be conducted by aborigines and persons other than aborigines, excepting Federal Government officials, missionaries, teachers, and agricultural instructors be prevented from entering the State.—A. and N.Z.
