Smith is Determined to Fly Pacific Ocean
DISCOURAGEMENT BY PREMIER By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. THE new Premier of New South Wales, Mr. T. R. Bavin, has tried to dissuade Captain Kingsford Smith from attempting a flight from San Francisco to Australia, but without success. The airman is determined to attempt the trip.
Reed. 10.14 a.m. SYDNEY, To-dav. F°r some time past, agitation has been afoot to prevent Captain Kingsford Smith and companions 'from attempting the Pacific flight. At the first meeting of Mr. T. R. Bavin's new Cabinet, a request for further financial assistance was declined in view- of the risk attending the flight. Premier Bavin said that on reports made to him regarding this matter, he was satisfied that the flight, on its present lines could not be proceeded with.—A. and N.Z. hop off for Sydney on November 3. weather permitting. regardless of Premier Bavin’s recommendations for the abandonment of the flight. The San Francisco “Call’* announced to-day that Captain Smith is reported as stating that all the financial assistance which the New South Wales Premier had agreed to had been furnished.—A. and N.Z. Giles’s plane, which was wrecked near Elko, Nevada, is being shipped here lor repairs, and may be ready for the trans-Facifie flight to New Zealand in two or three weeks.
