DEARER BANANAS APPI.ES firming Apples are steadily advancing in price and supplies are becoming short. All varieties of fruit are restricted. Field and garden produce is well supplied. Egg are slightly firmer. The Hinemoa arrived from Norfolk Island this morning, but a few small parcels of fruit on board went mostly to private buyers. I • Strawberries are expected to make j their appearance within the next fortj night, but indications are that the flush i of the season cannot be expected to eom- ! menee for at least three weeks. Most j of the beds, apart from those in cerfain I districts effected by disease, promise j profitable yields. j The varieties of available apples are J now thinning out, and prices registering |an advancing tendency. A few Canadians ; left over from last shipment are making ' up to 21s a case. | Bananas have advanced, but. though i sufficient ripe bananas- are available for j present requirements, the market shotild I be short again before the arrival of the next boat on Monday week. | Prices in the field and garden produce I section remain practically unchanged | with a steady demand for most vegetables. CALCUTTA TEA SALES By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. CALCUTTA, Wednesday. At the Calcutta tea sales there was a strong tone for all descriptions. Wellmade orange Pekoes advanced three pies. Inferior descriptions were about steady and medium and brokens were firm. Prices for useful liquoring tannings tended in sellers’ favour. Clean common tea was in strong demand. Commonest sold fully to recent quotations. The average prices realised were: Common Pekoe and- Souchong, 12 annas 6 pies to 13 annas 3 pies; common broken Pekoe and Souchong, 13 annas 3 pies to 13 annas 9 pies; even black-leaf Pekoe, 14 annas to 14 annas 6 pies.—A. and N.Z.
