LEARNING TO SWIM
PONSONBY CLUB’S RECORD EXCELLENT RESULTS 03TAINED i The important branch of swimming | carried on by the Fonsonby Club ; the teaching of the school children “to ! swim is one which should be encouraged. Mention was made of the question in the annual report submitted to the annual meeting last night. It was stated that although hard pressed for funds, it was able to continue the lessons last season. Professor D. B. Anderson, official instructor, was responsible for the continuance of the classes by his generous offer to accept a considerably reduced fee. Many people were apathetic to the work, but the results of the club's efforts were noteworthy and a sufficient answer to those people who could not be interested. It was to be hoped that the day was not far distant when compulsory swimming in the schools would be introduced. , _ During the year 464 New Zealand Council certificates and 210 club certificates were issued to the children attending the five Fonsonby schools. These figures showed an increase of 48 club and a decrease of 57 council certificates on the previous season.
