CHURCH EXTENSIONS
ADDRESS TO SYNOD Extension of church work in Auckland was reviewed by Archbishop Averill at the opening of the Auckland Diocesan Sj r nod yesterday. “During the past year a considerable amount of activity has been manifested in the erection of church buildings,” he said. “New churches have been built at Helensville and Kaikohe. New church halls have been erected at Glen Eden and West End, Parochial District of St. Columba. The chapel in connection with the Home of the Order of the Good Shepherd has been consecrated. The church at Rawene has been consecrated, and the churches at Royal Oak and Milford dedicated. New vicarages have been built at Papakura and Papatoetoe. “The foundation-stone of a new church at Broadwood has been laid, and new churches are to be erected shortly at Otahuhu. Stanley Bay and Ruawai. The new brick church at New Lynn is nearly completed. The church at Howick and St. John's College Chapel have been restored, and St. Thomas’s Church, Auckland, renovated. The church at Panmure, and St. Stephen’s Chapel, Parnell. will be restored shortly. “The new chancel is being added to the chapel at the Diocesan High School for Girls. St. Chad’s Church, in the Parish of St. Alban, has been removed to a new site, and an addition has been made to the parish hall of St. George's. Ranfurly Road. St. George’s Church. Thames, has been restored. The Maori vicarage at Parawai, Thames, has been rebuilt, and the Maori vicarage at Ahipara, which was burnt down, has been replaced.’’ The Archbishop appealed for the church extension fund, saying that it had enabled the diocese to make a forward move of considerable value, and so helped to provide the means of grace in rapidly growing districts which might otherwise have had to wait for several years before a church building could be erected.
