TEXTILE'S DOUBLE

FIRST WIN UNPOPULAR IMPROVEMENT TOO MARKED Fresh from bis Sydney triumphs, Vaals represented New South Wales in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday week- He drew No. 24 at the barrier, and his owner, Mr. E. Moss, was warned by Victorian friends that the marble was a severe handicap. Vaals opened favourite, and shortened considerably. Hawick was always second choice, with Beauhania and Homerus ranking next. One of the most heavily backed candidates was Textile. An owner who had his own colours carried successfully in this event a few years ago gpt in early, and laid out enough to win £IOOO about Textile, and the price shortened. Textile had not won a race for months. He was third to Thracian and Beppinsan at Moonee Valley on September 10, and third again at Mentone on September 17 to \Volla Walla and Brigadier Bob. Both races were over 10 furlongs. The winner had a hostile reception from a large section of the crowd, who evidently considered that the improvement in his form in three Weeks was too marked. Textile is a six-year-old horse by Green Seal, is trained by E. J. O’Dwyer for Mr. C. O. Brown, and was ridden on the Saturday by W. Scanlon- By running the mile in 1.397;, Textile created a newrecord for the race. Last Saturday Textile won the Caulfield Cup.
