Big Programme at Trentham

FEW AUCKLANDERS ENGAGED QMALL, but select, describes the Auckland contingent to be 0 seen out at the Wellington Spring meeting at Trentham to-morrow and on Monday. The review of an excellent bill of fare follows.

V\ T JTII the two-year-old classic, the * * Wellesley Stakes, to come up for decision to-morrow, and the weight-for-age event, the Champion Plate, on Monday, in addition to a fine lot of handicap contests, the Wellington Club has a programme to present that should be the means of attracting a record attendance. Big fields predominate, and with the course in its present hard and fast order there promises to bb some stirring contests. The first event, at midday, is the

There are a dozen engaged, and the best of this lot would appear to be Brigadier Bill, Tarleton, Anchor, Kaikahu Koauau, Matu and Vexatious. In the recent past South Islanders have done well in this class of race, and in Tarleton and Kaikaliu they have two good representatives. Three that will come in for big support are Anchor, Tarleton and Brigadier Bill. A big field of youngsters will be on hand to contest the TAITA HANDICAP

There are 23 in the race, and among those that have been out and shown some form, in addition to others who are said to be promising, are Second Wind, Silver Rule, Full Feather. Aus-

tralis. Tea Doll, Royal Duke, Select and Flicker, but it is quite on the cards that here the winner’s name has been overlooked. One has only a little form and reputation to go upon, and in this case Second Wind, Silver Rule and Tea Doll have done well enough to eufn solid support. Nineteen remain in the WAINUI HANDICAP 1 mile.

Beacon Light is said to have gone on the right way .since liis two races at Wanganui, while that useful mare Mundane will find the conditions to her liking if she is not in need of a race. Royal Game will go a merry mile, and so will Tiega, who is in good form. Damaris will be watched with interest, to see if she will do better on this level course, and in view of her remaining classic engagements. Monoghnn is a useful sort, and Doree has u lucky victory over Paleta to her credit. ~ Vertigern, Cerf, Vesperus, Nippy, Orazone, Vivo and Ganymede help to make up a nice field and a puzzl for backers, who may in desperation go for Tiega, Damaris and Doree. There are no less than 31 in the RIMUTAKA HANDICAP 7 furlongs.

Th: will present another tangle to optimistic punters, for there are several that can go a good seven furlongs. Rowley, King Midas, Vigilance, Cornstalk, Blimp, Wanderlust, Reckless, Limosa, Lin Arlington and Mandarine are a few that appeal most, and to reduce this ten down still further the favoured ones on the totalisator may be R ley, King Midas and Reckless. Of much more reasonable dimensions is the field in the WELLINGTON HANDICAP,

On top are the two Ellerslie deadheaters, and of course they meet on exactly the same terms as m their

memorable race here last week. Star Stranger is the more susceptible to improvement, and that race when he tied with Mask should tune him right up. Both promise to be in the picture. Degage is rather a disappointment, for she has not won a race for some time. Tresliam cannot be recommended on account of his inconsistency, and Yoma

has not raced for a while. Bennanee has a chance here to atone for many disappointments, but the journey will probably be too far for Royal Game. Black Mint is always a possibility, although it will be rather against him that he is to have his first race of the season. Rouex is a lightweight

possibility, and in this category can also be placed Novar, Nippy and David Garrick. The connections of Boy continue to aim high, but so far lie has won one small event this season. It is not an easy race to sum up, but Star Stranger, and Mask will be two of the best fancied. Then follows the classic race for juveniles, the WELLESLEY STAKES Of £1,000; 5 furlongs Childsplay Prince Humphrey Freehold Tea Miss Moutoa Treasury First Ruler Banket Shot Silk Lucky Light- Chit Jet Black Red Jazz Flying Binge Mooregas Shona Raasay Royal Duke Knightlike High Disdain There are some very smart youngsters engaged, and include no less than six winners—Childsplay, Prince Humphrey, Tea Miss, Chit, Knightlike and Raasay. The first-mentioned has a great burst of speed, and so too has Prince Humphrey. Raasay everybody is wanting to see in good company, and he will find it in this contest. Tea Miss may not be quite up to the standard of the others, and also Chit. Knightlike should not be overlooked, for it is likely that he will go better on this course. Freehold has not won a race yet, but he was second in the Avondale and Welcome Stakes, and shrewd judges are selecting him to be hard to beat on this almost straight five furlongs. The placegetters should come from the seven named, and the three that promise to be most heavily backed are Prince Humphrey, Freehold and Childsplay. There are some good sprinters in the SHORTS HANDICAP, 6 fur.

There is the material here for an excellent contest, and some of those that should be in the running are Lysander, Grand Knight, Joy King, Shirley, Benzora, Booster, Gascony, Licinius and Royal Ceres. The placed horses should come from among this lot, and

of them the fancied ones may be LySander, Booster and Royal Ceres. There is another big bunch in the last race, the

Some of these are good hack sprinters, notably Duke Abbey, Imitation, Paper Boy, Vigilance, Miss Mercia, Arch Arrow, Ruaqura, The Raider, Grey Mist, Reckless, Royal Picture, Panther, Maui, Mandv and Card Trick. The field of 31 is an unwieldy one, and a good many of them will have their chances extinguished at the start. Three that may come into favour with bettors are Miss Mercia, Duke Abbey and Imitation. In two races on the card at Trentham to-morrow there are more acceptors than there is accommodation on the totalisator, consequently bracketing has been necessary, and the following horses will be coupled on the machine: Rimutaka Handicap: Tone and Priceless, Thurville and Ring Boy, Glengassy and Austerlitz, Bourne and Gourmet, Lilock and Masher. October Handicap: In addition to the ordinary coupling of Sarchee and Hymgreat, and Reckless and Rosebush, Keddar and Kindle will be bracketed by reason of a joint interest, while the following are coupled by reason of totalisator accommodation: Mandy and Quantum, Maui and Bronstell, Card Trick and Oscillation, Calithe and Fee Simple.
