Trafalgar Day

i ENGLAND’S GREATEST ! SEA VICTORY COMMEM- | ] ORATED THROUGHOUT I THE EMPIRE TO-DAY j 122ND ANNIVERSARY The enemy numbered 33 men-of-war to Nelson’s 27. With 12 ships he flung himself upon their centre while Collingwood with 15 ships-of-the-line attacked from the rear. At the end of the day the Brit* ish had 20 of the 33 French and Spanish ships. Of! the balance, some were lost in the storm that followed, in which the British lost not a ship. It was a bold stroke, characteristic of the cool daring of the “small and undersized” seaman who led the van, and whose victory and death is commemorated today. In the city to-day there were few business houses or public buildings from which bunting of some description was not flown. In some cases it was the flag of a foreign nation, joining in the general celebration of England’s great naval victory of October 21, 1805, and also in honour of one of her greatest seamen. Special activities for the day, organised by the Auckland Navy League, included addresses given in the afternoon at the Regent Theatre by Lieutenant-Colonel E. H. Northcroft, Mr. F. L. G. West, Mr. T. M. Holmden and Mr. L. P. Leary, during the screening of the British naval j film, “The Flag Lieutenant.” In the schools the day was observed either by the delivery of addresses appropriate to the occasion or by flag-saluting ceremonies.
