In a report to the Soviet Executive on the economic progress of the past 10 years, the chairman of the People’s Economic Council, Kuibyshe, says the Government had given special attention to the development of industries for which machinery was nonexistent during the Tsarist regime. The Soviet had brought up the electric capacity from 780,000 kilowatts in 1913 to 2,100,000 in 1927, and had increased the output of oil by 30 per cent. The country was now producing generally 20 per cent, more, and the plans for the next five years aimed at a ISO per cent, increase. Machine construction had been increased by 28S per cent., the electrical output by 198 per cent, and the chemical trade by 16 per cent. Agriculture had also increased, and the number of workers was 24 per cent, higher and their wages were 45 per cent, better.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
