AUCKLAND AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION
SUCCESSFUL AT HOME
Scots Hall was filled almost to capacity last evening by members and guests of the Auckland Automobile Association, who were celebrating the attainment of the 5,000 mark on their membership roll. The hall was decorated with streamers of red, white, blue and gold, and the colonial flags. Gaily coloured Iceland poppies were used for the tables, and palms , and great bowls of arum lilies made an attractive stage decoration. The chairman was Dr. J. Howard Lawry, who is president of the association. Dr. G. de Clive -Lowe gave an illustrated address during the evening on “The Growth of Motoring.” A splendid programme of vocal, elocutionary and orchestral items* was very much appreciated. Songs, “Sink, Red Sun,” “To a Miniature,” and
Hame,” were contributed by Miss Smith.
The Lyric Quartette gave excellent renderings of “Oh! Miss Hannah!” and “Sleep, Kentucky Babe.” Mr. Ripley was* heard in “I Fitch My Lonely Caravan at Night” and “My Dream.” two very well received solo numbers.
A duet, “The Two Beggars,” was given by Messrs. Richards and Thomas. Mr. Alan McElwain supplied humour in his usual inimitable style. His contributions were “Mr. Perlmutter” and “The High Cost of Living,” and a speech on the traffic by-laws. The other artists were Mr. Clyde Howley and his internationals, who provided some very popular orchestral numbers, including “The Doll Dance,” “What Does It Matter?” and “I’ve Never Seen a Straight Banana.” Mr. Howley’s “Nightly Dozen” of eccentric dance steps were enthusiastically received. The chairman read congratulatory telegrams from president Toogood, Mr. W. J. King, of the Hamilton branch, Mr. Malcolm Campbell, of the Franklin branch, and Mr. Clinkard, Tauranga. A feature of the evening was the presentation of the council to Mr. G. W. Hutchison, of a black coffee set, with exquisite filigree of silver, as a token of appreciation of the excellent work done for the association.
