GOVERNMENT JOINS MARINE FREIGHT WAR
SHIPOWNERS WARNED
DISCOUNT TO WOOL SHIPPERS By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. CAPETOWN, Tuesday. A freight war is in progress in South Africa. It has been given a dramatic turn by the intervention of the Government, in view of the recent decision of a conference of shipping companies to give a special discount to shippers of wool from the Union, provided these shippers employ exclusively the vessels of the companies concerned in the conference. The Government has warned the Union Castle Company that these methods are regarded as a deliberate and open violation of the mail contract, and has notified it that unless they are stopped immediately the Government will not only take action to terminate the mail contract by giving the necessaiy year’s notice, but will also exercise its powers under the Post Office Act in order to impose countervailing dock charges. The “Cape Times” says: “These bludgeoning methods are unworthy of the Union Castle Line’s fine past record. The action of the shipping conference is giving a powerful lever to the Socialist elements in the Pact Government, which is searching lor a good excuse to commit South Africa to the fatal policy of State shipping.” —A. and N.Z.
