Merritt Superior to Arthur Mailey

ENGLISH OPINIONS

JAMES BETTER THAN OLDFIELD By Cable.-—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.20 a.m. LONDON, Wed. t Mr. Douglas Hay, manager of the New Zealand cricket team in England, who has been obtaining the independent judgment of well-known umpires, states that Mr. Len Braund, seven times umpire in matches in which the

New Zealand team played, considered that they were a better bowling side than the Australians.

W. E. Merritt was already superior to Mailey.

The famous former wicket-keeper, Harry Butt, considered that K. C. James had no superior behind the wickets, not even Oldfield.

Mr. Hay points out that no county side had more than four batsmen to gain over 1,000 runs in a season, while the New Zealanders had six. He considered the defeats were entirely due to weak fielding, which was surprising in a young side.—A. and N.Z.

M. Gregory, A. Jackson, R. McNammee, G. Morgan, N. Phillips, W. J. O’Reilly, B. F. Watson. The two last named have not played for New South Wales before. O’Reilly is a promising slow bowler and Watson is a fine bat.—A. and N.Z.

TOURISTS’ HARD TASK

POWERFUL N.S.W. TEAM

Reed. 12.30 p.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The critics, commenting on the forthcoming New Zealand cricket match against New South Wales, point out that the New Zealand team will be facing a tremendous hurdle, as it will have just completed five weeks of travel.

The players will hardly have lost their sea-legs and will be out of practice.

They can hardly be expected to make a great showing against the powerful te'Vi selected. —A. and N.Z.
