To-Morrow’s Racing at Te Rapa Course
BIG FIELDS ENGAGED
THE Spring meeting of the Waikato Racing Club will be held on the magnificent Te Rapa course to-morrow and on Saturday. Splendid fields have been paid up for to-mor-row and the racing promises to be keen and exciting.
TN one race alone to-morrow no less than 42 horses were paid up for, and this, the Trial Plate, has had to be reduced to two divisions of 21 horses each. Even then this makes for quite a big field in each section. The cup has attracted a useful lot of handicap performers, while the other events have filled well enough to make for some great racing. The course promises to roll out in fine order. A commencement is to be made at noon with the 12.0 WAIMAI HURDLES Of £l5O. 1J miles st. lb. st. lb. Slump .... 10 2 Prince Lu ..90 Mount Marta 9 13 Red Comet . 9 0 Rady Lady Cintra 9 0 Spalpeen . 9 12 Pekatahi ..DO Pendavies . . 9 11 Wiltshire ..90 Bourn ... 9 6 Lucess ... 9 0 Gold Rep ..96 Royal Day . 9 0 Ned Kelly . 9 3 Le Cheval . 9 0 Pouri .... 9 0 Lucilius ~90 An acceptance of 17 for an event of this sort shows how popular the race is. There are some unknown quantities among the number, most notable of the public performers being Slump, Mount Marta, Lady Spalpeen, Gold Rep, Ned Kelly, Pouri, Wiltshire and Royal Day, and it will be surprising if the placed horses come from outside this lot. Doubtless Slump and Mount Marta will be the favourites. Then follow the two division races, the 12.40 TRIAL HANDICAP Of £IOO. 6 fur.
The totalisator will be open but the once on these races, and the dividends paid out on the winners only of each division. In the first division, as also in tile second, most of those engaged will be green and little is known of their abilities. Te Waka and Taurimu will be among those fancied. The following is the field in the 12.45 TRIAL HANDICAP SECOND DIVISION
Amour ... 84 Auriculus showed some promise as a two-year-old last season, and La Roma, Mussie and Micrometer have also displayed pace. A pair that will obtain good support are La Roma and Mussie. The two-year-old race will also assist in tangling punters. This is the 1.20 TAM AH ERE STAKES
Havering impressed when seen out at the Pakuranga Hunt parade at Ellerslie, and is apparently possessed of speed. Potodawn is also to have his first outing, and like Winnington, hails from J. T. Jamieson’s powerful Papakura stable. Red Lion was pro-
minent to the turn in the one race he has had to date, and Envoy has the speed if not the condition just yet. Avon Court is fast out from the tapes, and as she has gone on the right way since her last outing at Ellerslie may improve on her last showing. Volirnond has a lot of speed, but will require more experience. It does not look a strong field, unless there is a “springer” produced, and then it may pay to follow the totalisator lead. Otherwise the public’s fancies may be Avon Court, Red Lion and Havering. This paves the way for the big event, tho 2.5 WAIKATO CUP Of £650; li miles. Te Kara ... 9 4 Lord Star ..70 Transformer 8 4 Mint Leaf ..70 Eden Hall . . 713 Llandudno . 7 0 Master Doon 713 Nippy ... 7 0 Royal Mint . 7 9 Queen Arch . 7 0 Desert Glow 7 6 Kendal ..70 Delightment 7 6 Thirteen acceptors make a nicesized field. Te Kara is not at all badly treated, and with only six pounds more than he won the Avondale Cup with he must stand a chance, especially on this track. Transformer is going to be one of the fancied division, if the preliminary market is any guide, and on his showing at Ellerslie* last week he must be ready for backing. Eden Hall reads nicely, and he has a fine show* here of making amends. Master Doon is always liable to pop up, and it must not be overlooked that he won this race 12 months ago. Royal Mint and Mint Leaf, in the same stable, will be well suited by
the course, and they should have their chance, especially the former. Desert Glow seems to be coming to hand fast, and of Delightment it can be said that he ran a great third, at his first attempt over this distance, to Te Monanui and Mask in the Mitchelson Cup. If that race did not get to the bottom of him it is going to be difficult to sort out anything to head him off. Lord Star will only be fancied if the truck is heavy, and Llandudno may be troubled by the last bit. Nippy will be bracketed with Eden Hall if started, but the indications are that he will be among the missing. Queen Arch is a possibility, but Kendal has apparently strayed into this race. It should be h. fine betting race, with Royal Mint, Delightment and Eden Hall among tho most fancied.
A dozen figure in the following event, the 2.45 HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP
Day Guard ran some solid races at Ellerslie recently, and as the mile is within his compass he should be prominent. King-Merv is having his first race for some time, and Siaosi also may not be ready. The latter had a race
at the Avondale meeting and that should assist him. Bright Day is to make a reappearance after a long absence, and Gold Jacket, although not seen out this season, is an honest sort. Ballachulish likes a roomy course, and he will get it here. Thursby, Rarangi and Te Koroke appeal, but Athenry, who scored at both Marton and Wanganui last month, will be preferred by many as a result of these two good efforts. Day Guard, Athenry and Ballachulish will be in demand. Only eight remain in the 3.25 CLARKIN STEEPLECHASE Of £200; about 3 miles. Kendal . . 11 4 Frisco Jack 9 10 Pendavies . . 11 4 Raymond . . 9 0 Prince Rufus 10 2 Wiltshire ..90 Hypothesis . 9 13 Haurangi Girl 9 0 Kendal is in great condition just now, and so too is Pendavies. Both are on the same mark, and the latter is much preferred, for he is a good horse over country. Prince Rufus has been away for some time, and Hypothesis has a nice weight. Frisco Jack has won at his two starts to date, and he is evidently more than useful, so much so that Pendavies will have his work cut out to concede the Manawatu representative 221 b. Wiltshire is in the same colours as Pendavies and will be a fine second string if started. There should be an interesting duel for favouritism between Pendavies and Frisco Jack. * The open sprint is the next on the programme, the 4.5 CAMBRIDGE HANDICAP
Nancy Lee .73 It is not an exceptionally good field, although several good horses figure in the list. Some of them are running out of their distance, and others again may want a race or two. Those that have been seen in action this season are Gala Day, Oration, Archeno, Nancy Lee, Waltzer, Serang, Nastori, Berinthia and Tinoiti, and they should supply the fancied division. These may be Archeno, Gala Day and Waltzer. The first day closes with the 4.50 HAUTAPU HACK HANDICAP
Tho two at the top of the weights are now out of hack class, although they are allowed to run out their hack nominations. Both won at Ellerslie a few days ago, and they will be in the picture to-morrow. Further down are Bright Dawn. Te Kawana, Whakarite, Respirator, Abbey Day, Bold Front and Thurnus. The fancied division will probably comprise Branson, Bright Dawn and Bold Front.
