CANTEEN FUNDS
NO DISTRIBUTION OF PROFITS PROMISED
MINISTER’S EXPLANATION WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Several questions relating to the operation of the Canteen Trust Board are answered by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston, who said in the House to-day that the members of the board had been nominated at a meeting of senior officers of the N.Z.E.F. held in Wellington at the completion of the repatriation of troops from Abroad. The N.Z.R.S.A. and the rank and file were represented on the board, and Parliament had authorised the handing over of the money to the trustees.
The Minister denied that a promise of profits had been held out to soldiers, as no profits were anticipated from the fund, the object being to pifcserve the money for distribution among distressed soldiers and dependants and when other relief funds become exhausted. He denied also that Sir Andrew Russell had made a statement five years ago that the funds would amount to £8 10s a man. The reason why this fund was not administered by the Government was that the patriotic and war relief funds were contributed to by the public, who appointed tl\eir own trustees to administer the moneys under provisions of the War Funds Act of 1915.
