ROYAL DAMON IN GOOD FETTLE
GALLOPS OVER MIDDLE DISTANCE
HASTINGS TRY-OUT Tn running a mile and a-quarter in -•11 on Saturday, Royal Damon accomplished the best gallop for many rears over this distance on the Hastings tracks, reports “The Delver” in :he “Tribune.” Epistle picked him up -lie last once round, taking 1.40. Birklad, alone, ran half a mile in Watchman, carrying about 10.0, finished in front of Othon over seven furlongs in 1.34 t. This, the only early
gallop, ' was done before breakfast, when a very heavy fog hung over the course. Gold Box beat Hypnotic over six furlongs in 1.191, neither finishing as if relishing his task. Lipsol and Coot were sent seven furlongs, taking 1.33. The latter, with a pull ;in* weights, being the better. This mare stays on better on the track than on the day. MAY BE GOOD Ganymede finished a couple of lengths ahead of Keen —who was wide out all the way—at the end of once round run in 1.41 J. Taking into consideration that Ganymede was carrying about 9.7, the gallop was most impressive for the three-year-old and may yet justify his nominations for such races as the Stead Cup. Raasay brushed over half a mile in 50A. This being done by himself, was a most pleasing effort. He is the fastest youngster tried this season to date. Primax, by running three furlongs ill 40, at his first effort demonstrated he possesses the necessary speed to win races. Gesto (Lord Quex —Queen Lizzie) worked nicely, but Luke Wilson has not yet asked him to gallop, as he will not be raced until the New Year. Cloyne got to the end of five furlongs in 6-5. This filly carries a great deal of condition and will take considerable racing before being in best trim. Min ter. on the grass, ran half a mile in 51. The South Island owned gelding will be raced in the Maiden at Waipawa, and later will lie sent down to his owner, Mrs. A. Rutherford. In company with Bulolo W. Clifton sprinted his Bisogne—Spain three-year-old for the first time, showing the family’s ability to gallop. Torquil is doing no fast work, so is not likely to go to Trentham. The sister to Purse proud came twice down the straight, showing no improvement in her awkward action. Eloquent, who last year cost just on £4OO, has not proved a profitable investment, winning but one small race. On Thursday she was shipped South, having been purchased for the stud by Mr. lan Duncan. By King Mark or King John (undoubtedly King Mark) from a half-sister to Bobrikoff this mare is just the type to be successful as a matron.
