EXPLOSION VICTIM STILL SERIOUSLY ILL
MORNINGSIDE MISHAP
One victim of the distressing mishap which occurred at Morningside yesterday, Mr. G. McMahon, of 14 Shaw Street, Edendale, is still seriously ill in the Auckland Hospital. He is suffering from concussion and severe injuries to the head.
Mr. A. Watts, of 56 Oxton Road, Edendale, another victim, is also in hospital, but he passed a fairly good night. His right eye is dangerously injured and there is a possibility that he may lose the sight of it.
Mr. IT. Jackson, of 249 Balmoral Road, the third member of the party, was able to return to his home, but he is suffering from abrasions and shock. The men were working in a tunnel on the Mount Albert Borough Council’s sewerage works at the Morningside Reserve when the explosion occurred. Mr. McMahon was drilling holes in a rock face, about 15 feet underground, ready for blasting, and it is thought that the drill struck a plug of gelignite which had not exploded on a previous occasion.
Messrs. Watts and Jackson were behind Mr. McMahon and did not receive the whole force of the explosion. The Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, states that an inquiry will be held into the cause of the accident. To-day the Inspector of Explosives visited the scene of the mishap.
