To Play for Dunedin.—Eastman, Otago’s cricket coach, will play for the Dunedin Club this season,' states a Press Association message from Dunedin.
Inebriates’ Home.—The Minister of Justice has appointed the following visiting committee for the Inebriates’ Homes at Pakatoa and Roto Roa: Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., Mr. J. H. Luxford, and Mr. A. J. Stallworthy.
Appreciation of Bequest.—The Manukau Count.;/ Council at its meeting yesterday decided to erect an appropriate tombstone on the grave of Miss A. E. Keith, at Pukekohe, as a mark of appreciation of the bequest to the county of her large estate at Weymouth.
Races Abandoned.—Owing to the Te Kuiti Racing Club having been refused permission by the Auckland District Committee to race at Te Awamutu on Saturday, November 5, they have now’ abandoned any intention of racing till the New Year.
Radio Fire.—Faulty wiring caused a radio set which Mr. W. P. Wade, of Otorohanga, was assembling, to take fire, with the result that the set was completely destroyed. Mr. Wade, with considerable presence of mind, quickly extinguished the outbreak and prevented further damage.
Slight Fire Damage.—Little damage was done to a house at 7 Rattrav Street, occupied by Mr. J. C. Tanner, a little after 5 p.m. yesterday, when a fire, stated to have been caused by a defective califont, broke out. The City Brigade soon had the flames under control.
Labourer Fractures Skull.—Mr. W. Griffiths, aged 37, a labourer on the Edendale sewer contract at Cabbage Tree Swamp, had his skull fractured through being struck on the head by a heavy rock yesterday afternoon. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital where he was reported this morning to be not seriously injured. Mr. Griffiths lives at 11 Jason Avenue.
Waikato Fishing.—Last Sunday a party of three Te Awamutu fishermen experienced good sport in the Waikato River near the hydro-electric construction works at Arapuni. Between them they secured 23 fine, even-.sized trout, all in good condition. Another party of two, fishing near the same locality, landed 21 trout, which ranged in size up to 351 b weight.
House Damaged By Fire,—A wooden house at the bottom of Grafton Road, was badly damaged by fire shortly before S o’clock last evening. When the City Brigade arrived the flames had a strong hold, and the two back rooms were totally destroyed. The house, which was occupied by Mrs. J. Dodd, was insured for £ 300. and the contents for £2OO, both in the Commercial Office.
