SLIGHT INJURIES TO LIMERICK

LIMOND GELDING MAY LINE UP FOR CHAMPION PLATE

(Special to THE SUX.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Great interest was manifested in the arrival of the Ulimaroa at Wellington from Sydney to-day. There was a big crowd of racing folk and a dozen horses aboard.

Most interest of course was taken in the landing of Limerick, who drew the attention of hundreds, including a regiment of photographers. He walked out of the crate sheathed in bandages, but did not appear to be at all lame.

His departure from the wharf was long delayed awaiting the arrival of a veterinarian to certify that he was in fit health to land. Limerick went on to Trentham, where he will remain till after the coming 'Wellington meeting. He will be exercised on the tracks as soon as possible, and during the week a decision will be arrived at as to whether or not he will take his place in the field for the Champion Plate. WELLINGTON ANXIOUS

That is quite a burning question here, as everyone is anxious to see him run. He was injured in a motor conveyance just before leaving Sydney and suffered numerous abrasions. Also he had a hard campaign to go through, but if he is well enough to be started on Monday he will be a competitor in the Champion Plate, and no doubt will go out favourite. There does not seem to be any certainty as to who will ride lnm, but there will not be a shortage fl of applicants for the job. A. E. Ellis I and C. Emerson are being mentioned. 2 Mr. Ivnight, Limerick’s owner, also returned, and so did F. D. Jones, nis trainer. No doubt both are satisfied with the trip, during which the Limond gelding won about £B.OOO. DID NO GOOD None of the other members of xhe team did much good and after they were landed they were put aboard the boutliern ferry to go to Lyttelton, thence to Riccarton. These others were ■ Roscrea, Arikiwai, Tariff and Battle- j ment. Battlement registered some good track work in Australia, but raced badly. Another owner who returned was ! Mr. Rod McKenzie, whose trip, unlike j that of Mr. Knight’s, was unsuccess- i ful. His mares, Piuthair and Clarinda 1 did not show their true form, and were unable to win a stake to set against the expense of the undertaking. Both mares came back in charge of T Lloyd. LUCKY WITH RIDGEMONT Mr. A\ilfred Stead came back, bring- i mg with him four of the* two-year- i olds he took across to sell. The batch 1 which went over numbered six, but ! only two were disposed of. Among those who returned were Ridgemont, who won a race the day after being i very poorly bid for at a sale of thoroughbreds. Mr. Stead could not quit him, and might not be sorry now*, as j the youngster is said to be exception- I ally fast. He is not entered at Well- ! rngton, but might be seen out at one of the midsummer meetings. APPROACHING HAS-BEEN STAGE The steeplechaser Passin’ Through was another who was brought home. He also was a failure on the trip. He dm not win in any of his starts, and on the occasion of his last appearance he fell. H. Burt, the Manawatu rider who went over to pilot him, was another who returned. J. Barry, who went over to ride Mr Stead’s two-year-olds, was aboard, j Barry did not do much riding outside ! of what was required of him by Mr. j Stead. He won two races, one on Ridgemont and another, a long-priced ; w inner. Barry does not intend to . , settle in Australia, as had been suggested. Tie will be riding at Trenth v.n ! this week. Ollier New Zealanders, will be returning by the next steamer. Several were unable to get accommodation for i themselves and their horses on the [ Ulimaroa. •
