Channel Sensation
GIRL TO CROSS AGAIN Miss Gleitze Determined By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Received 10.15 a.m. LONDON, Mona-.,. MISS GLEITZE, the London typist, announces that she will attempt to repeat her Channel swim from Grisnez on Wednesday, for personal vindication and the honour of women swimmers.
CHE declares that the statement of her trainer that the water is too cold will not deter her. The fact that she was once successful will be a tremendous, help. Officials of the Swimming Federation, and newspaper men will accompany her. A painful sensation has been created by the Logan hoax, which is practically without parallel. Comment in the Press and by the public does not conceal the hostility aroused against the woman whose standing was responsible for the unquestioned acceptance of her story. She was honoured by the British Medical Association whicch tendered her a dinner at which the Earl of Birkenhead led in the congratulations.
The most outspoken view ot the hoax is that expressed by Dr Alfred Cox, secretary to the British Medical Association. He says: “How perfectly scandalous—it is disgraceful. X do not know what the association can do. It cannot ask for a return of its congratulations which were forwarded to Dr. Logan. The incident cannot affect her medical status, but I cannot imagine her word ever being believed in future. Her retention of her present position rests with the heads of the hospitals with which she is associated.” Officials of the Swimming Association say they did not believe the story in the first place.—A. and N.Z.
