“MY BEST GIRL”
After working for nearly two weeks in a perpetual downpour to get the necessary “rain” sequences, Mary Pickford has laid aside her rubbers and slicker for more ordinary attire in her current vehicle, “My Best Girl.” The production, being filmed at the United Artists Studios, is now entering the home stretch and the camera work is expected to be finished early in August. Due to the fact that normal June rainfall in Hollywood is cnly one-tenth of an inch, it was necessary to instal elaborate rain-making apparatus on the various sets in which the scenes took place. Miss Pickford and her leading man, Charles Rogers were the only principals who were called upon to get wet, but 300 extras were thoroughly soaked along with them in the street “shots” which took six nights of continuous work to film. A special drainage system was built to carry off the “rain” in order to avert possible damage to adjoining sets and buildings, and director Sam Taylor estimated that between eighty and ninety thousand gallons of water were used in the scenes.
