CHORAL SOCIETY
THURSDAY’S CONCERT The choral presentation of Mascagni s opera “Cavalleria Rusticana” amd Weber's “Mass in G” by the Auckland Choral Society on Thursday night should attract a large attendance of the musical fraternity. Mascagni’s opera is always popular, either When staged or given in choral form. It opens with the famous air, “O Lola,” sung by Turiddu, a favourite number of the late Enrico Caruso. On Thursday it will be sung by Mr. Hubert Carter, the well-known New Zealand tenor, who has won high praise for his work in several recent productions. Mr. Carter is reported to be singing at his best and the role of the devil-may-care soldier should suit him to perfection. Miss Phyllis Hazel, the charming young Australian contralto, will make her first appearance with the society in the opera and also in Weber’s “Mass in G,” which is being presented in addition to the opera. Included in the cast are Miss Etta Field, who takes the soprano solo, and Mr. Hank Sutherland, bass-baritone. In tne Mass the principal soprano role will be taken by Miss Alma McGruer, who is hailed as one of Auckland’s coming singers. The box plan is now open at the E. and F. Piano Agency.
