MOUNT EDEN WANTS TRACKLESS TRAMS
FEEDER BUSES CRITICISED Strong criticism was voiced at the meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening regarding the motor-bus “feeder” services beyond the Dominion Road and Mount Eden termini. A petition had been received, said Mr. G. L. Taylor, suggesting the installation of a trackless tram service with a charge of 2d for a single trip and 3d return. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, understood that there was a 20-minutes’ service on the Dominion Road route, and a 24-minute service on the Mount Eden service. Something should be done, he said, as the services were totally inadequate to meet the needs of th; increasing population. The council would have to obtain the cost of electricity from the Power Board. It was estimated that the cost of the tram service would be £2,200. Mr. R. McK. Morison held the opinion that a public protest should bo made regarding the present service. He moved that a strong letter of protest be sent to the City Council. In seconding the motion. Mr. A. M. Bryden, said when the Mount Eden Council concreted the roads past the termini, it was understood that tram rails would be laid in the middle of the roads. If the City Council could not improve the services the Mount Eden Council must, said the Mayor, but it had been hampered because the loan had been refused. Mr. Morison replied that the question had nothing to do with the loan, and it was the duty of the council to the ratepayers to provide efficient transport. The motion was carried, and it was decided to refer the proposal of the trackless trams to the Finance Committee for all particulars, and to consider and report.
