WAIPA CRICKET
DISTRICT ASSOCIATION FORMED (From Our Own Correspondent) TE AWAMUTU, Saturday. With the idea of forming a district association, a meeting of delegates of district cricket clubs was held at Te Awamutu on Friday evening. There were present: S. J. Fortescue, W. M. Winter, C. R. McLay, C. Tarr, H. T. Haselden (convener), M. Barnett, B. Kelly, L. Kay, Corbett, Smart, Ashton, Cahill, A. Coper, and Harlock. The chairman, Mr. M. Barnett, said the prospects for a successful cricket season were promising. Cricket this year would be chiefly confined to the farming community. There could be two divisions, with say, Paterangi, Korakonui, Te Awamutu, Te Kawa and Kihikihi in the A division, and the others in the B section. The A section matches could be arranged to conclude by say 3.30 p.m., and the B section games would finish about 5 p.m. After discussion it was decided to form a Waipa Cricket Association, the following teams being nominated:—Te Awamutu (two), Korakonui (two), and one each from Te Kawa, Puahue, Te Awamutu District High School, and Paterangi. It was considered the most effective way would be for town teams to play each other, and country teams to do likewise. Thus the difficulty of starting times would be minimised. Mr. Corbett stated Otorohanga had previously belonged to the Maniapoto Association, but latterly Railway (Te Kuiti) and Otorohanga were the only active participants, hence their interest in the Te Awamutu proposal. It was decided to accept Otorohanga if so desired. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr. W. G. Park, Puahue; president, Mr. C. J. Spiers, Paterangi; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. De Lacey Peake, Hairini; F. B. Bowden, Te Awamutu; D. S. Reid, M.P., Ngahinapouri; hon. secretary. Mr. H. T. Haselhonorary secretary. Mr. H. T. Haselden; treasurer, Mr. C. W. Rickit; committee of management, one delegate from each club and one from the Umpires’ Association. The Management Committee are: Messrs. Ashton, Te Kawa; Cooper, Puahue; Winter, District High School Kelby, Korakonui; Tarr, Paterangi; and Barnett, Te Awamutu. The affiliation fee was fixed at £1 Is. It was decided to open the season on the first Saturday in November.
