WEATHER SPOILS PLAY GREENS WELL FORWARD DOWLERS, having checked up their bowls, and got their flannels and blazers out from winter keeping, were doomed to disappointment on Saturday, the weather conditions preventing opening day play. Most of the Auckland greens were declared open, and members of the Centre visited the various clubs. WARATAHS SHINE ON FAST GROUND

SOUTH SCOTLAND BEATEN SCORE OF 36 POINTS TO NIL By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Saturday. The New South Wales Rugby team to-day defeated South Scotland at Melrose by 36 points to 0. On the fast, dry ground, which gave the Waratahs real home conditions, they displayed their best form.. They received a real Border welcome from a crowd of over 10,000 spectators. The visitors started the first half as if they were bound to win. In a few minutes Tancred was over the line and Lawton converted. Then E. Ford began one of his brightest displays. He scored in the corner, after running through the defence, but the kick at goal failed. The Waratahs’ forwards got possession of the ball from nearly every scrum, but were often penalised for being off-side. Ford again scored an unconverted try. In the second half the best incident in the game occurred. E. Ford crosskicked and Greatorex, running through from midfield, scored, and Lawton converted. Further scorers were Greatorex, E. Ford, Mann and Sheehan. The visitors overwhelmed the Border team. Lawton converted all but one try. Greatorex w’as the most outstanding player, and the crowd were delighted by the speed shown by E. Ford.— A. and N.Z.
