MOTOR CAR HURTLES OVER BANK IN DARK
ACCIDENT IN GORGE DRIVER'S LUCKY ESCAPE (From Our Own Correspondent) WAIHI, To-day. A two-seater motor-car driven by Mr. Alex Churton, of Cuba Street., Waihi, went off the road in the Karangahake Gorge on Saturday night and landed in the rocky bed of the Ohinemuri River, 40ft. below. Mr. Churton, who had a narrow escape from death, is suffering from a fractured rib, injuries to his back and shock.
The road is very narrow and dangerous at the spot were the accident occurred, and has many twists and c\irves. Coming round one of these Mr. Churton suddenly saw a motorcyclist ahead and it is not certain whether he proceeded to apply the brakes or change his lights from dim to bright, but suddenly he found the car toppling over the brink and remember no more until he found himself climbing out of the car. A good deal of damage was done to the body of the car, but the engine is still intact.
Mr. Churton was insured under THE SUN scheme.
