DUG THEIR OWN GRAVES

OVERWHELMED BY SAND A pathetic tragedy occurred at Berck Plage, a resort on the English Channel between Boulogne and Abbeville. Under the supervision of a religious sisterhood, a number of French children were spending their summer holiday there. One of the sisters missed four of the boys. Going to look for them on the beach, she saw a heap of sand, with a boy’s hand sticking out. Obtaining the assistance of some fishermen, she helped to extricate a lad of 13 named Blondel, who told a remarkable tale. He had been playing on the seashore, when three other boys asked him to come and play with them. Together they built a big tunnel, and when it was completed they all crawled into it. The sand collapsed on the top of them, he declared. At once the fishermen got spades and began digging operations. The boy’s three play - fellows were all dead when found. They were lads of 12 or 13, belonging to the Paris districts.
