Ready to Work for Food Only— Southern Europeans in Australia
.53/ Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.10 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. Inquiries by the Criminal Investigation Department into allegations by the State; executive of the Australian Labour Party, that Southern Europeans were working in country districts for no remuneration other than their food, shows that a number of Bulgarians and Macedonians endeavoured to secure work for 10s a week, with keep. A number got work at that rate. Others received £1 a week. The majority had been induced to come from America by shipping companies’ advertisements, that they could earn £1 to £3 a day in this country. Statements made by some Italians, Greeks and Slavs showed that they were prepared to work for food only.—A. and N.Z.
