A notable figure in the world of Labour has died in the person of Mr. Thomas Ashton, who was the first secretary of the Miners’ Federation of Britain. Be was 83 vears of age A. and N.Z. Air. Thou.as Ashton was born in 1544 hi Manchester. His father was a coalminer, and he began to work in the pits at an early age. He became secretary of local labour associations, and in ISBI was made general secretary of the Miners’ Federation, a post he held until 1919. For many years he was joint secretary of the International Miners' Federation, and later its general secretary. He was created a member of the Privy Council in 1917.
