THE KITCHEN FOLK

When the kitchen folk came to life the other night they found Monty Mouse sitting on the edge of the fender, looking every thoughtful indeed. “A penny for your thoughts!’* chuckled Grandfather Clock. “It’s very funny you should say that,” smiled Mr. Mouse. “I was thinking of you.” “And what were you thinking about me ?” “Oh, I just wondered why you never make a mistake and strike the wrong number of strokes?” “You must not be so inquisitive!” replied Grandfather Clock; “that’s Mr. Bell’s secret.” “And who is Mr. Bell?” squeaked Mr. Mouse, who meant to get to the very bottom of things. “Do be quiet, Monty,” sighed the nutmeg-grater; “you grate on my nerves.” “Cuckoo!” The astonished mouse turned sharply round and looked at all the kitchen folk in turn. “Who called me a cuckoo?” he demanded. ‘.‘lt wasn’t one of us,” said the frying pan. Very puzzled, Monty peered in all directions, and to his surprise noticed a dark object hanging on the wall. “Why,, it’s a cuckoo clock!” he exclaimed. “You might have known,” sighed the pots and pans. “It’s time we settled down for the night,” said the bread knife, and all the kitchen folk agreed. Joyce Thomson (aged 12). DOG PADDLING Lift up the right hand and draw the water toward you; at the same time, kick it away with the right foot. Then do the same with your left hand and left foot. You will soon get the knack of doing this. It is a change from swimming on your chest. NEW ZEALAND Oh, land of open spaces, Of silver winding streams. Of clouds and skies and sunshine, Of purple dusk and dreams; Oh, land of running rivers. Of live birds’ crooning cries, , Of lofty bush-clad mountains. And azure seas and skies; Oh, land of dreams and visions. Of youth and high desires. Of crimson glow at sunset. And love’s pure-burning fires; Oh, land of purple shadows. Of evening’s peace and calm: The land of my adoption, I yield unto your charm! —Vera Thornhill (aged 14).
