THAMES COUNTY

GOVERNMENT APATHY The main item of interest at the Thames County Council meeting held yesterday was the apparent apathy on the part of the Government in having the coast road from Thames to Coromandel declared a main highway, and the chairman of the council, Mr. H. Lowe, will proceed to Wellington to attend the meeting of the Main Highway Board on October 20, with regard to the approaches to the Kauaeranga bridge and the bitumen penetration work between Kopu and Thames borough boundary. The Main Highways Board had decided to pay the council a total sum of £ 6,000 for the work, on which the rate of subsidy was in dispute. A reply was received from the Prime Minister regarding the maintenance of the main roads. Mr. Coates stated that the representation contained in the resolution had been duly noted and forwarded for the information and consideration of the Minister of Public Works. A letter from Mr. T. W. Rhodes, M.P., stated that he understood that Government was introducing legislation this session dealing with the question.
