Fatal Burning Accident.— -Mary Shortland, the little Maori girl who was seriously burned at. Tangowahine this week through her clothes catching fire, died in Whangarei Hospital yesterday. Chopped a Cabin Door. —Leslie Fowers, a fireman, aged 24, was fined £1 at the Police Court to-day for damaging a ship’s cabin door by chopping it with an axe. He was also ordered to pay for the damage done. Theft Alleged.— Hibell Wallis, aged 22, who was charged at the Police Court to-day with stealing a clock, razor and military medals was remanded to appear again next Thursday. Kauri Gum Levy. —The levy of 15s per cent, on the current f.o.b. -export value fixed by the Kauri Gum Control Board, on all gum exported from the Dominion after November 1 next, was announced by Gazette notice this evening. Legacy For Hospital. —The Palmerston North Hospital Board was notified to-day that a legacy of between £1,200 and. £1,500 had been left the institution by the late Mr. Joseph White, of Feildinfir . September Babies. —The total live births in the urban areas of the Dominion during September was 1,164, and the deaths 597 (males 318, females 279). Sixty-seven deaths occurred of children under five years of age, or 11.22 per cent, of the whole number. Fiftysix were under one year.—Press Association. • Cyclist Severely Hurt. —While proceeding on a motor-cycle to a dance at Kaitoke, three miles from Wanganui, at about 8 p.m. yesterday, Maurice Armstrong, aged 19, employed as a boilermaker at the railway workshops, collided with a straying horse.
