THE “AIR FORCE ”
THOSE who have harboured grave doubts on the subject will be much relieved to learn that New Zealand really has an Air Force, even if it is not yet really a force. A message from Wellington announces that rates of pay for this arm of defence have been gazetted, and that, among other disbursements, cadets are to receive 5s a day. It is good news; it is glad news; it is heartening news. “The Air Force is to be recruited from the ranks of the territorials.” True, there are no machines for the recruits to practise in the one or two that are capable of taking tbe air being required for the use of the veterans, who are to mould the service. But the gazetting of rates of pay must have a wonderful effect. At present there is more of moulting than moulding about our “air force.” since most of the machines are unable to fly. But hope at least takes wings, and some day dreams may come true.
