ANTIQUE PEWTER
It is essential that antique pewter, so happily and artistically "in the picture” when displayed on an old oak dresser, should be cleaned with great care. Only the very finest abrasives should be used. A splendid method is to pour over the pewter hot water impregnated with wood ashes. (Hot lye of wood ashes.) It should then be rubbed with very fine sand, employing a hard woollen rag for this purpose, until all dirt has been dissolved. Then follows a rinsing with water, when the pewter should be allowed to dry without being touched. This is of the utmost importance. otherwise spots will appear. For the finishing touch rub with dry bran. New pewter may be beautifully polished with a paste of whiting and brandy. The articles should be rubbed in it until the mass becomes dry.
