TAX PROPOSED FOR STREET PARKING
UNDERGROUND GARAGE NOT FEASIBLE “It appears! to me that ill view of the extensive use that is mc.de of the jmblio streets for all-day parking: of cars, it might be possible to devise some system whereby an amount could be collected from the owrers of such cars for the privilege of using: the streets as a parking place.’* This was the suggestion made by the city engineer last evening when the Works Committee reported: “The committee cannot make a recommendation with reference to the proposed urderground parking garage, out it views; with alarm the: increased erking of cars in streets which have en permanently paved, and. asks that the legal ami by-laws committee should investigate the position and report.” The question had been referred to the committee as the result of a suggestion from Cr. Brinsden that the council consider the building of such an underground park, under Fanshawe Street, the location extending: approximately under Albert and Nelson Streets. The city engineer went into the position, and reported that a garage 566 feet long, with accommodation for 156 cars, could toe built, together with a smaller one capable of parking 90 cars. The cost of constructing the; first would bo about £ 80,000, and the other would involve about €46,000. He pointed out that this would mean at least 13s 4d a week, not counting attendants and lighting, etc. The question was referred to the other committee.
