COMBINED CONCERT

TOWN HALL LAST NIGHT A bright and interesting programme was presented at the concert tendered to Mrs. E. Sutherland at the Town Hall last evening. The concert was given in recogni- j tion of Mrs. Sutherland’s past services to the communiety both as a vocalist and pianist, local musical societies > combining to present a programme ; fully worthy of the occasion. Mrs. Sutherland herself appeared on the programme, contributing two contralto numbers, “Sea Ways” (Sanderson) and Squire’s “My Prayer,” both numbers being enthusiastically received. The choral pieces by the Royal Auckland Choir were “The Voice of the Torrent” (Paliard) and “Rolling Down to Rio.” The last-named, a bright, rollicking sea song, was accorded a double encore. Instrumental items also added variety. Miss Judson and Mr. Barry Coney contributed as a pianoforte duet “Danse Macabre” (Saint Saens), and Miss Judson, Mrs. C. Prime and Messrs. Eric Waters and Barry Coney, as a piano quartet, Mendelssohn’s “Fingals Cave.” Miss Mina Caldow was heard to good advantage in “The Great Awakening” (Kramer), Mrs. Cyril Towsey also being warmly applauded for her singing of Cowen’s “At the Mid-hour of Night.” Mr. Barry Coney and Mr. Ernest Snell also contributed enjoyable vocal numbers, the former giving Herman Lohr’s “Wind on the Heath,” and the latter, “Black Roses,” by Sibelius. A tenor number by Mr. Birrel O’Malley, “Yesterday and To-day” (Spross) also met with evident appreciation, as did the singing of the Lyric Four, Messrs. Ripley, Richards, McElwain and Thomas. Humorous items from Mr. Alan McElwain proved very popular, “Perlmutter’s Speech,” in particular, being warmly received. A pleasing vocal duet, “A Night in Venice” (Lucan), by Mrs. Cyril Towsey and Mr. Barry Coney, concluded a most enjoyable entertainment. , The accompaniments were in the very capable hands of Mrs. A. W. Macandrew and Mrs. C. Prime.
