The Reason Why
! THE SPORT OF WALKING IS AT A LOW EBB IN NEW ZEALAND J Why is it that the sport ol: walking is at such a low ebb in the Dominion? The opinion was expressed the other day by R. Twyneham, thrice New' Zealand university champion, that one reason is because that it is the hardest of the athletic sports, calling for longer and much harder training than do the others. The walker has to develop a muscle that is quite unknown to. the average person, and it takes a great deal of arduous training, involving considerable muscular stress, before this muscle on the front of the leg is capable of bearing the strain of a hard race. Possibly another reason is that walkers are not catered for at all at sports meetings these days. Yet New Zealand could produce tomorrow one athlete who could take his place among the crack walkers of the world, and this is G. S. Cabot, of th<j Otago University. Cabot is the cham-
pion of the Dominion in this branch of athletics, and is well known throughout both Islands for his great performances in championship meetings. Big things are expected from him when he starts in the Australasian championships, -which are to take place at Wellington next December.
