TRAFFIC RULES

KEEP TO THE LEFT A MAGISTRATE’S OPINION (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, To-day. Motor accidents are now almost of daily occurrence, many occurring because of the non-observance of the rules of the road. During the hearing of a case to-day the magistrate pointed out that the by-laws provided that motorists should keep to their correct side of the; road. Counsel considered the by-law unreasonable; and ultra vires. The bylaw was all right in the case of meeting traffic, but it was absurd to think motorists, proceeding through Taranaki, for instance, should have to keep to their correct side all the time.

Sergeant Henry stated that, taking into consideration the increasing amount of motor traffic on the roads of late years, it would be advisable that all traffic should be required to keep to its correct side of the road. The magistrate said it seemed to him the present requirement was that traffic should keep to the left side of the road and he would like to see the by-law more strongly contested.
