WORK ON HUIA DAM

COUNCIL’S INSPECTION Members of the City Council had a day in the bush yesterday, motoring as far as possible into the catchment areas of the Auckland water-supply system. The principal reason for the inspection was the progress of works at the site of the new Huia dam, which will increase the water held for the citv bv 500,000,000 gallons. So far the work has been mostly of a preparatory nature, including the building of a light tramway, portion of which will be used for bringing metal to the scene of the concrete, work, and the felling of the bush on the area that will later be covered by the waters held in the dam. This has not yet been burnt off. Concrete work will not commence until early in the new year. The wall be will 400 ft from wing to wing, and about 120 ft high. Eventually the water will be carried by pipes to the Nihotapu Valley, including passage through a tunnel 58 chains long, and will then come into the Titirangi filtration plant with the Xihotapu waters. At the present time 135 men are employed on the works.
