NEW AFRICAN BISHOP
AUSTRALIAN APPOINTED
The Rev. G. A. Chambers, of Holy Trinity Church, Dulwich Hill, has been appointed to the newly constituted Bishopric of Central Tanganyika, East Africa. The consecration will take place at Canterbury, in England, on November 1.
The Rev. George Alexander Chambers was educated at St. Paul’s College, University of Sydney, and graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1900. and Master of Arts in 1904. He became a Bachelor of Economics three years later. Mr. Chambers entered the Mioore Theological College, Sydney, in 1901, and the University of London in 1906. He was ordained deacon in 1901, and ipriest in the following year by t 1... Archbishop of Sydney. He was curate of St. Clement's, Mosman, from 1902 till 1904, and in the la„tter year became vice-principal of Moore Theological College. He held that position till 1911, and during two terms—in 1908 and 1920-21, was act-ing-principal. Mr. Chambers held the position of lecturer at the college from 1911 till 1914. He acted as locum tenens at Springwood in 1905. and at Geeveston, Tasmania, in 1907.
During 1910-1911, Mr. Chambers was In charge of Ultimo, and in the latter year was appointed rector of Holy Trinity, Dulwich Hill. He was on leave during 1917-1919 as an Australian deputation in England for the Colonial and Continental Church Society, and was associated with educational work with the expeditionary forces in France. Mr. Chambers held the appointment of Archbishop’s chaplain for the lay readers from 1910 till 1919. In 1926 he was appointed rector of St. Paul’s, Canterbury’, in addition to being rector of Holy Trinity, Dulwich Hill. The new bishop was appointed examining chaplain for the Archbishop of Sydney in 3 911, rural dean of Petersham ini 1925, and warden of Trinity Grammar School, Dulwich Hill (which he founded) in 1913. He was appointed commissioner for the Church Missionary Society in 1922, and three years later was appointed honorary secretary and Federal commissioner for the C.M.S.
Bishop Chambers will return to Sydney about December 22, and in the middle of next year will leave, with Mrs. Chambers, for East Africa.
