ROYAL CHARTER AGAIN FIFTH SUCCESSIVE WIN By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. MELBOURNE, Wednesday. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's spring meeting was; advanced a further stage to-day. The weather was fine and there was again a large assemblage at Caulfield. Owing to divisions the programme was extended to eight events.
In the decision of the Emo Hurdle Race Sir Gleam led over the last six obstacles, and won easily. His owner, Mr. A. Crosier, has won ma’hy jumping races with Berrumbee, Tullilah, Gulyarri and others.
Narkey was always prominent in the Nursery Handicap, and scored a narrow victory. He is owned and trained by the former international jockey, Frank Bullock, who scored his first success as an owner. Narkey cost 250 guineas as a yearling. In the second division of the Nursery Handicap Martiimis was third in the initial stages, but won easily. He is owned by Mr. B. Chaffey, and was ridden by F. Dempsey. This was Martimas’s first outing in public. The Herbert Power Stakes brought out a field of half a dozen. Royal Charter was racing in second place three furlongs from home, and finishing brilliantly he won by a neck from the imported horse Silvius. Royal Charter, who was ridden by W. Duncan, has scored five successive victories, and he was accorded an ovation on. coming back to the enclosure. J. Holt, who trains Royal Charter, has trained the winner of the Herbert Power Stakes on six occasions. Royal Charter is engaged in the Caulfield Cup with 9.1. Dismal, The Governor and Best Light fell. Sir Gleam won by three lengths, six lengths, between second and third. Time. 3.45 J. MONA NURSERY Of £800; 42 furlongs. First Division NARKEY (F. Bullock), b f, by Rossendale—Scintilla, 7.11 l ASH QUEEN,, 8.0 2 SON O’ THE MIST, 8.2 3 Thirteen starters. Narky won by a head, half a length between second and third. Time, 57sec. Second Division MARTI MAS (B. Chaffey), b f, by Ethiopian—Ebon, 7.11 i ST. FLAVIN. 8.3 2 SCARCITY, 7 12 3 Fourteen starters. Martimas won by three lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, 55sec (race record). HERBERT POWER STAKES Of £1.000; weight-for-age, with penalties and allowances; 1 mile 3 furlongs. ROYAL. CHARTER (J. M. Royal Charter won by a neck from Silvius, who was separated* by half a neck from Thracian. Son o’ Mine was fourth. Time, 2.22. MOONGA HANDICAP Of £600; 7 furlongs. METELLUS, 9.6 1 ; CHEOSAN, 7.5 2 HAWICK, 7. Si . . . 3 There were 15 starters. Won by half
a head, with half a length between second and third horses. Time, 1.27 J. The finish was an exciting one. Metellus, who was running second in the early stages, obtained the verdict by the narrow margin of half a head. The rider, Duncan, and the trainer. Holt, gained the second win for the afternoon. Metellus won the same race last year. COONGY HANDICAP Of £750; 1 mile 3 furlongs. BUNKIE, 8.8 l TEXTILE, 8.7 2 DEVONSHIRE, 7.13 3 There were 17 starters. Won by a neck, with half a length between second .and third. Bard of Avon was fourth. Time, 2.20. Bunkie was fifth at the start, but finished best and secured a brilliant win. Bunkie, who is engaged in the Ceulfield Cup, is owned and trained by the veteran, J. Wilson. MOORA WELTER HANDICAP Of £600; 1 mile. First Division UQUEE, 7.1-3 l BRIGADIER 808, 9.4 2 ELARBY, 9.9 3 There were 12 starters. Won by three lengths, with half a length between second and third. Kenna was fourth. Time. 1.40 J. Second Division SEiA MONEY, 8.6 1 M.ADOM, 8.2 o KING OSRIC, 8.3 3 .Won by half a length, with the same distance separating second and third horses. Time, 1.42.4. Uquee led throuhgout in the first division and won comfortably. The winner was trained by a former New Zealander. Mr Dave Price. In the second division Sea Money was third until the race was under way, but led into the straight and won by a narrow margin from Madom (who finished fast), thus giving Mr. Daniels the third win of the meeting. The fractional times in the various races were as follow: Power Stakes. —First seven furlongs, 1352 i; last six furolngs, 1.143; final mile, 1.40. Coongy Handicap. —First seven furlongs, 1.29 J; next four furlongs, 50:1; last mile, 1.414. Martimas ran the last half-mile in the Nursery Handicap in 4S.—A. and N.Z.
