HALF-VOLLEY AND PICK-UP

A correspondent has asked "American Lawn Tennis” to differc...ate between the half-volley and the pick-up, two strokes which he claims are frequently confused in small tennis clubs. Neither of these terms are defined in the “Glossary of Technical Terms” which appears in the official Year Book of the U.S.L.T.A. There are acknowledged definitions of the haif-voMey, however, which indicate that it is a very general term used for any stroke made by hitting the ball just as it rises from the ground. It is a poor name for such a stroke, because there is a great deal more of the quality of the ground stroke in it than of the vollev. If there is any difference between the half-volley and the pick-up, it would seem logical that the latter term covers balls which are “Hit just after they strike the ground” from deep court, for the volley is generally associated with the forecourt.
