PRISONERS SPOIL THE LABOUR MARKET
MT. EDEN GAOL QUARRIES Soon perhaps a quarry-worker wishing to follow his craft will have to qualify for the hard labour gang in Mount Eden Prison. Lean times and keen competition have resulted from the competition between quarry-owners and the Mount Eden gaol quarries. In the latter case prison labour is employed on prison rates of wages, but the private quarry-owners having to pay union rates are being undercut in prices. The conference of the New Zealand Genera). Labourers’ Federation discussed the position yesterday, and decided to try to arrange a conference between quarry proprietors and the Government to eliminate the unfair competition from which the workers are suffering. The conference to-day is debating the subject of immigration and unemployment, and that will conclude its business.
